GUIDED TOUR OF THE IBERIAN CITY OF CASTELLET DE BANYOLES - KUM

HISTORY AND HERITAGE in the Iberian city of Castellet de Banyoles OF TIVISSA - kUM

Guided tour of the Iberian town of Castellet de Banyoles, located about 2 kilometres northeast of the town of Tivissa, in the Ribera d’Ebre region. It covers an area of 4.5 hectares. The entrance to the enclosure is defined by the base of two large pentagonal towers that flanked the entrance to the town, making it one of the few examples of this type of structure in the Iberian world. It is one of the most outstanding Iberian urban settlements in southern Catalonia. Its main function would have been to control trade between the coast and the interior, along the course of the river Ebro. The archaeological finds that have been made are of exceptional importance and constitute the treasure of Tivissa. In 1912, a set of bracelets, bangles, rings and a small hoard of twenty-nine coins, four gilded silver paternosters, eleven silver drops and two silver necklaces were found, forming a set of Iberian votive pieces, the best example of Iberian goldsmith work preserved in Catalonia.

WHAT TO SEE IN CASTELLET DE BANYOLES?

A market day in the Iberian city

We present a fun activity based on games as a learning tool that encourages communication, creativity, cooperation and teamwork, among others. The main objective is to understand the relationships and communication that took place between the Iberian settlements and the orientalising cultures. Through the production of a local product, visitors will be able to go back in time and learn about the development of prehistoric markets and the relations between the different Iberian settlements, experiencing the different cultural relations that were established in order to obtain both the raw materials necessary for their production and the foreign products of the Eastern peoples (Phoenicians, Etruscans and Greeks), objects considered luxuries by Iberian society: such as dyes, perfumes, salted fish, wine, etc. The activity is aimed at family/interactive groups. The activity is aimed at a family/intergenerational audience, from the age of 6.

What are we going to do?

  • The main objective of the activity is to raise awareness of the archaeological site and its heritage value.
  • To learn about the Iberian culture of the area.
  • Actively participate in the different dynamics of the activity.
  • To work in a team and establish different social and communicative relationships.
  • Learning through play

Unravelling Iberian culture: Small Fragments

We present an intergenerational activity based on games as a learning tool that encourages communication, reasoning, creativity and teamwork. The main aim is to raise awareness of the Iberian language and writing through the study methodology used by historians in the world of research. Based on the data provided by the study of archaeological material, visitors will become researchers for a day. They will reflect and draw conclusions about the lives of four people and their relationship in the past. With the help of a “historian’s kit” and the discovery of different inscriptions that we will find on different archaeological objects that have been preserved over time, such as stone, metal and ceramics, we will resolve the different questions in order to offer the most accurate hypothesis possible. The main objective of this activity is to highlight the fact that archaeology is today the main source of information for the study of Iberian culture, since we know its language and writing, but it has not yet been translated in its entirety. We can read the Iberian texts and know what the language sounded like, but we cannot understand the meaning of the words because the language is still untranslated. The activity is aimed at a family/intergenerational audience, from 6 years upwards.

What are we going to do?

  • The main objective of the activity is to raise awareness of the archaeological site and its heritage value.
  • To learn about the Iberian culture of the area.
  • Knowledge of Iberian language and literature.
  • Actively participate in the different dynamics of the activity.
  • Work in a team and develop different social and communicative relationships.
  • Learning through play.
