GUIDED TOUR OF THE CONVENT OF SAN BARTOMEU DE BELLPUIG

History and heritage of the convent of San Bartomeu

Guided tour of the convent of San Bartomeu de Bellpuig, an excellent example of the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance. Ramon Folc de Cardona-Anglesola, Baron of Bellpuig and Viceroy of Naples and Sicily, wanted a solemn setting for his mausoleum, so in 1507 he promoted the construction of a Franciscan convent on the site of the former chapel of Saint Bartholomew. For this reason, the decoration highlights the contrast between Franciscan austerity and the noble splendour of the patronage family. The most monumental work, however, was the mausoleum of the Baron of Bellpuig, which was originally inside the church and is now in the parish church. It was built in 1524 with Carrara marble by the Neapolitan sculptor Giovanni Merliano da Nola. It has the structure of a triumphal arch and is accompanied by allegorical motifs referring to the personality of the deceased. Its quality makes it one of the best Renaissance works in Catalonia.
