Archaeological control of the works
Emergency interventions associated with the execution of a construction project. Archaeological monitoring of construction sites consists of preventive monitoring or supervision of earthworks before or during the execution of a construction project. These projects may concern a small plot of land or a large area. This type of activity is based on the visual control by an archaeologist of the work being carried out in an area where archaeological remains may appear.
Earthworks
Earthworks are normally carried out mechanically, with the necessary machinery for each operation and under the supervision of a supervisor. In the event that archaeological remains are found, they must be demarcated mechanically or manually and, depending on their size, will give rise to a campaign of extensive excavation of the remains. The technical director must draw up a report assessing the size, strength and characteristics of the site, as well as the programme for a major archaeological excavation. In the case of small archaeological elements, they can be located, excavated and documented during the archaeological survey itself.
Spatial coincidence
If there is a spatial coincidence between the archaeological remains found and the construction project, an overlay of the construction project and the archaeological remains found will be carried out. This will determine the degree of impact. If the monitoring or control has not revealed any archaeological remains, the result is considered to be negative. If the Technical Director deems it appropriate and technically justified, the archaeological intervention will be terminated and the preliminary or final report will be written.
