GUIDED VISIT TO THE MOLÍ DE L'ESPÍGOL IN TORNABOUS

History and heritage of the Iberian town of el molí de l'espígol

Guided visit to the Iberian town of Molí de l’Espígol de Tornabous, which stands out for its advanced urban planning and reached its greatest splendour between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. At that time, El Molí d’Espígol was transformed from a settlement into a city, with an economy based on agriculture and livestock. The complexity of the houses and innovations such as the canals under the cobblestones show the progress of the settlement. And, above all, the urban layout, which has survived to the present day. The excavations begun in 1970 by the Museu Diocesà de Solsona and carried out since 2000 by the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya (Catalonia Archaeological Museum) have uncovered two well-defined archaeological areas: the urban core, with remains that can be seen and visited, and a suburban area to the north, outside the walls of the oppidum, the result of the city’s growth. The source of water for the community has also been identified: an ancient well, now dried up, located outside the walled core.

WHAT CAN YOU SEE IN THE MOLÍ DE L'ESPÍGOL?

A market day in the Iberian city

We present a fun activity based on games as a learning tool that encourages communication, creativity, cooperation and teamwork, among others. The main objective is to understand the relationships and communication that took place between the Iberian settlements and the orientalising cultures. Through the production of a local product, visitors will be able to go back in time and learn about the development of prehistoric markets and the relations between the different Iberian settlements, experiencing the different cultural relations that were established in order to obtain both the raw materials necessary for their production and the foreign products of the Eastern peoples (Phoenicians, Etruscans and Greeks), objects considered luxuries by the Iberian society: such as dyes, perfumes, salted fish, wine, etcThe activity is aimed at a family/intergenerational audience, from the age of 6.

What are we going to do?

  • The main objective of the activity is to raise awareness of the archaeological site and its heritage value.
  • To learn about the Iberian culture of the area.
  • Actively participate in the different dynamics of the activity.
  • To work in a team and establish different social and communicative relationships.
  • Learning through play

Unravelling Iberian culture: Small Fragments

We present an intergenerational activity based on play as a learning tool that promotes communication, thinking, creativity and teamwork. The main objective is to make the Iberian language and writing known through the study methodology used by historians in the world of research. Based on the data obtained from the study of archaeological material, visitors become researchers for a day. They will reflect and draw conclusions about the lives of four people and their relationship in the past. With the help of a “historian’s kit” and the discovery of different inscriptions that we will find in different archaeological objects that have been preserved over time, such as stone, metal and ceramics, we will solve the different questions in order to be able to offer the most accurate hypothesis. The main objective of this activity is to highlight the fact that archaeology is today the main source of information for the study of Iberian culture, since we know their language and writing, but it has not yet been fully translated. We can read the Iberian texts and know what the language sounded like, but we cannot understand the meaning of the words because the language is still untranslated. The activity is aimed at family/intergenerational audiences aged 6 and over.

What are we going to do?

  • The main objective of the activity is to raise awareness of the archaeological site and its heritage value.
  • To learn about the Iberian culture of the area.
  • To know the Iberian language and literature.
  • Actively participate in the different dynamics of the activity.
